Loxley Ashgate Soft Grip Painting Palette Knives

The Ashgate range of knives offers a greater economy without compromising on quality The Ashgate range has a comfort grip and easy clean handle.

Most artists refer to any painting tool with a handle and blade shaped end as either palette knives or painting knives not really defining it's true name or use. The palette knife is a long straight blade or spatula used to mix your paint as well as scraping your palette clean. A painting knife is a very similar tool which can be used to produce a large range of textures and effects in your artwork like impasto, fine lines and ridges or for scraping off paint.

Painting knives that we sell normally have a metal blade that is semi-flexible and a wooden handle. It is possible to purchase plastic versions but we find that these are not as user-friendly as the flexibility is not the same and it's difficult to produce detail in the marks you are making in the paint. For this reason we would always recommend you consider using metal palette knives. Strictly speaking, palette knives have a crank handle. The idea behind this is that it allows or helps the artists to not touch the painting surface whilst working.

The knives come in a multitude of different shapes such as the teardrop, diamond, rectangle or spatula and variations of those. You just need a selection of knives that suit your style of painting. At the end of the day is long as it makes the mark you want and you like using it, it doesn’t matter what it's called.

We have used lots of different painting knives and palette knives and found most perform exactly the same job and it’s impossible to distinguish between the two. Don’t restrict yourself to only using any tool with the mediums that are recommended, remember as Bob Ross used to say happy accidents happen, try and see what happens when you use it with other mediums such as watercolour or gouache. Palette knives or painting knives certainly are best used with the mediums such as oil and acrylic paints however as long as you’re enjoying your artwork and making marks it is art.
