Salting Watercolour Technique

Salting Technique

For an exciting background for a picture, using salt on your paint can create lovely effects. Simply wet your background with clean water. Prepare good puddles of your colours. Paint the colours on where required and allow to run together. Sprinkle salt lightly on the surface and allow to dry. The crystals will absorb water, leaving a sparkling effect behind. You can use table salt, rock salt or even dishwasher salt.

This sample shows how you can use salt on a background and then paint over it to create a simply poppy field effect.
